For the past 10 years, we’ve dressed up as a family for Halloween. I’ve shared the photos here on the blog (usually in September!). We brainstorm costume ideas all year, and start really planning and getting things in the summer. But not this year. This year, the kids didn’t want to do a family costume. 😭😭😭 So I had to pivot and do a couple’s Shrek Halloween costume – so that’s what I’m posting today!

Now, did the Husband want to dress up as a couple? No siree! Which I’d say is 75% of the reason for this late of a post (it’s Halloween today!). Of course, the kids say they’ll be in a group costume next year… but we’ll see about that!
We did have a LOT of ideas for group costumes, but there wasn’t a full consensus.

Our most willing participant is always Tootsie. And by willing, I mean she doesn’t say anything and just stands looking sad when we put clothes on her, ha. This year, we have her dressed as Donkey. Shrek’s talking sidekick.

The Husband is dressed as Shrek, and while we do have green face paint for his costume, the idea of getting all made up just to take photos was like pulling teeth for him. As usual, I find all the costume elements at the thrift store, and Shrek wears brown shoes, brown paints, an oversized off-white shirt, and a brown tie across vest and belt. Honestly, I found like the perfect cardigan with the same ties – just cut off the sleeves.

I am dressed up as Princess Fiona, who wears a green dress with gold trim. This dress is all green and I found a matching table runner with gold trim that I have wrapped around here. I also dyed my hair a brighter red – and apparently Princess Fiona has a single braid, so I will add that too.

We will see if the Husband actually dresses up tonight – but I’m not sure I can count on the kids to dress up with me next year either. So it may just be Tootsie and me from now on.
Oh, and if you wanted to know; Félix is dressed as Stuart Little (we coincidentally watched both movies in one week and they were obsessed with them). He is wearing a red sweater, beige pants and a yellow shirt underneath, with mouse face paint (and possibly ears). Élise is a gingerbread-lady with brown shirt and pants and a red dress. All accessorized with pompom candies and painted white frosting. And Zachary wanted to be a pickle. This pickle costume in fact, because he refused a DIY/thrifted mix.
